For 30 years, Anderson Career Training Institute has been helping people take a simple idea, like What if I started something of my own? then turn it into something real.
In that time, nearly 2,000 Albertans have stepped forward with an idea and built something meaningful: a business, a livelihood, and a future on their own terms.
And today, that opportunity matters more than ever.
The Rise of Self-employment
If it feels like more people are starting businesses, you’re right.
In Alberta, over 98% of all businesses are considered small businesses, the highest percentage in all of Canada. Even more telling: the vast majority of businesses, about 87%, have fewer than five employees.
These aren’t massive corporations. They’re individuals. Partnerships. People with ideas who decided to take a step forward.
And Alberta leads the way, consistently ranking among the highest in Canada for businesses per capita.
In other words, entrepreneurship isn’t the exception—it’s everywhere.
Why More People are Choosing this Path
Self-employment today looks different than it did even a decade ago.
People are choosing it not just for income, but for:
Independence
Flexibility
Purpose
The ability to build something of their own
Technology has lowered the barriers. Access to customers is easier than ever. And the idea of “one career for life” has shifted.
More people are asking: Why not me?
From Idea to Action
Starting a business can still feel like a big leap.
That’s where ACTI comes in.
Our Self-Employment Training Program is designed to take you from idea to action with:
Practical, real-world training
Guidance from experienced entrepreneurs
Mentorship as you build your business
It’s not about theory. It’s about helping you do it for real.
An Opportunity Worth Taking
For eligible participants, the program is fully funded through the Government of Alberta, with support from the Government of Canada.
That means you can focus on building your future without the financial barrier that often holds people back.
Looking Ahead
Thirty years in, one thing hasn’t changed: the people.
Every new business starts the same way: with an idea, and the decision to take it seriously.
If you’ve been thinking about starting something of your own, this might be your moment.
Because when 98% of businesses started small…
…it’s clear where every big idea begins.
